New entrepreneurs may have a hard time defining the goals they want to achieve, which can lead to people setting out with only a vague sense of which direction they’d like to head. The ability to identify your goals, however, is key to creating a successful business, or making sure that what you’re working toward is something you actually want.
Unfortunately, this process is often a lot harder than it may initially appear. Oftentimes, you may not specifically know what you want or why, which makes any actions taken more a reaction to events than something planned.
Below, Jonathan Silk is one of six members of Forbes Coaches Council who break down their best approaches and actionable steps in order to help working professionals such as yourself define their goals and formulate a plan to get there.
Members share a few ways you can establish, then reach, your goals.
1. Find What Stops You From Thriving
First feel inside what totally turns you on! Then identify specifically what stops you from thriving in that space every day. Working to avoid those stops is what drains your energy. Now turn about face and crystalize what you want, specifically, and why you want it. Then strategize. Touch your passion. Identify your “don’t wants.” Crystalize your wants. Take action. All simple steps and intense work. – Leeza Carlone Steindorf, Core Success LLC
2. Create A Vision Board
There is an old saying, “seeing is believing.” Take the time to create a vision board that shows your written goals, pictures of your goals as well as the important steps that you need to take to accomplish them. – Pasha Carter, The VIP Network
An actionable step to help someone define the goals they want to achieve is first to identify and focus on the area they want to change. They should consider what their priority is, what matters most to them, what they can do differently and what they can do better. This helps to broaden their perspective, create self-awareness and assists in the creation of the developmental plan. – Jonathan Silk, Bridge 3
4. Unpack Thoughts And Challenges First
Feeling overwhelmed and a lack of direction can leave people feeling stuck and unsure of what comes next. People need to unpack their thoughts and challenges first, getting everything down on paper, which can result in an instant sense of clarity. They can then begin to set goals and put a strategy in place. Without this first step, goal setting can contribute to feeling overwhelmed instead of relieving it. – Karen Kissane, Karen Kissane Coaching
5. Visualize What Your Ideal Life Looks Like
Begin with the end in mind by visualizing and identifying what you want your life to look like. You can then reverse engineer an action plan that creates the framework for you to achieve those goals. Starting with the ending allows you to identify your income, lifestyle, wealth and equity goals, and then begin to create the details to help you get from your current situation to the life that you desire. – Susan Scotts, The Entrepreneur’s Source
6. Start With Why, And Then Work Backward
Make sure you’re clear on the big picture vision and then take a step back and see what will get you there. Goals that are not serving the vision are a waste of energy. When defining a new goal, ask yourself if this goal is serving the vision. If not, define a new goal. – Daria Zest, Signature Life
